The district’s history
Moments in the district’s history as its landmarks tell it, each with its source.
The Greek era, as archaeologists suggest
Al-Ahram Gate quoted Dr Ahmed Abdel Fattah, a former member of the Supreme Council of Antiquities: archaeologists have suggested the well was an ancient tomb built in the Greek era, since the Greeks were known for placing their tombs near the sea.
1910
A postcard the Bibliothèque nationale de France catalogues as “Place Sidi-Bishr”, published by the Delios house in Alexandria, shows the beach crowded with bathers and its cabins lined up along the road.
6 January 1917
Delegates of the International Committee of the Red Cross visited the camp. They described it on the sea shore among sand dunes and palms, 15 kilometres north-east of Alexandria, holding 430 officers, 410 orderlies, 10 imams and 20 civilians, with a mosque inside its fence.
1941
The cemetery was laid out in 1941 on 925 square metres in Sidi Bishr. More than 500 soldiers, prisoners from the Palestine front, lie there, and the Turkish military attaché in Cairo looks after it.
1945
The mosque was enlarged to four times its former area.
The mid-20th century
Miami began to grow as a summer resort in the mid-20th century, and took its name from the American Miami to give the new neighbourhood an international, holiday air.
