Ancient Alexandria

331 BC – 7th century AD

On the coast east of the ancient city, archaeologists suggest Bir Masoud was a tomb of the Greek era, since the Greeks liked to place their tombs near the sea.

Resort and camp

1860–1950

The Sidi Bishr Mosque was renewed when a railway reached the area, postcards lined up the beach cabins, and in the First World War the British held Turkish prisoners in a camp among the dunes and palms.

The district today

1950 – today

Miami grew into a resort in the mid-20th century; El Montazah was separated from the East District in 1982, and in 2013 it was divided, this part becoming El Montazah I.
